Helping Growing Teens Build Positive Self-Esteem

When teens have good self-esteem, they know that their life is worthwhile and that they are loved and cared for. Growing teens need to feel that those around them (family, friends, teachers, etc.) respect and love them for who they are. The responsibility of helping teens build good self-esteem often falls on the shoulders of those that surround them. There are many different ways that these individuals, specifically parents, can help teens to develop positive self-esteem.

Be encouraging of achievements. Help growing teens to set challenging, but achievable goals. Overcoming challenges and struggles and being able to achieve goals will help them to feel al sense of worth and accomplishment.

Focus on improvements rather than perfections. Helping teens to realize that no one is perfect and that they are recognized for improvements in their activities and behaviors will help motivate them to make good decisions. This can also help them see that their actions are noticed and will give them extra encouragement to live up to good expectations.

Avoid too much negativity. It is okay to correct teens when they are doing something wrong, but in a gentle manner accompanied with praise for other activities they are succeeding in. Make sure to put more focus on what your teen has done right. It is possible to manage the good while trying to correct the bad.

Listen to what your teen needs to say. Respectfully listen to the ideas and opinions of your growing teen and encourage them to think critically. It is important to teach teens how to disagree without arguing.
