Academic Excellence in a Therapeutic Environment

Academic Excellence in a Therapeutic EnvironmentFor teenagers, ongoing academic success can seem out of reach when mental health issues take priority.  At Liahona Academy, we understand that a student's education is too important to neglect during their recovery journey. Through our integrated treatment model, students receive personalized learning plans tailored to their needs alongside intensive therapeutic support. This holistic approach promotes healing and the development of lifelong academic passions and skills.

Acknowledging the Challenge

For many troubled teenagers facing emotional or behavioral issues, staying engaged in their education can be a major challenge. When mental health struggles take center stage, focusing in the classroom is difficult.  However, ignoring a student's academic needs during treatment can negatively impact their recovery. At Liahona Academy, we understand the critical role of education in healing the whole child. Our therapeutic boarding school program is uniquely designed to promote wellness and academic success.

The Liahona Approach

Students work closely with qualified teachers within our supportive community environment to continue advancing their studies.  Unlike many residential programs where schooling consists of online courses or packets, Liahona provides a true classroom experience led by experienced, licensed educators. Students attend school Monday through Friday, following a traditional schedule with core subjects and electives.  Teachers keep in close contact with clinical staff regarding each student's needs and strengths to ensure their academic plan supports overall treatment goals.

Individualized Learning Plans

In addition to core academics, student schedules are tailored to their skill levels and learning styles. One-on-one tutoring and remedial classes are available for those needing extra help in certain subjects.  Advanced placement and honors options provide enrichment for those operating above grade level. The goal is to challenge each student appropriately and help them reach their maximum academic potential despite setbacks from mental health or behavioral issues. Our credit recovery program also assists those who may have fallen behind due to struggles before entering Liahona. We aim to help every student stay on track for graduation through individualized attention and various support services.

Emphasis on Creativity and Self-Expression

Healing through creativity and self-expression is also emphasized at Liahona Academy. In addition to core subjects, we offer a rich selection of elective classes, including art, music, photography, publishing, woodworking, culinary arts, and more.  Students are encouraged to explore their talents and interests through these therapeutic activities, which research shows boosts positive mental health outcomes. Participating in hands-on learning experiences that bring core concepts to life has also been shown to improve overall engagement and achievement.  Electives at Liahona are essential in helping students find their passions to motivate them inside and outside the classroom.

Integrating Academics into Treatment

When integrated thoughtfully into a therapeutic environment, academics become a vital part of the recovery process rather than an afterthought or impediment.  At Liahona, teaching staff work closely with our clinical team of counselors, nurses, and psychiatrists to create customized education plans for each student. Teachers are trained to recognize mental health warning signs and know when to advise clinical intervention versus proceeding with regular lesson plans. Communication between the classroom and treatment environments ensures seamless support as students work through emotional challenges that could otherwise derail their education. The structured daily routine and clear academic program expectations also serve therapeutic purposes. Staying focused on schoolwork and following a schedule supports stability during an unsettled time of receiving treatment.  Developing skills like time management, organizational habits, task initiation, and the ability to complete assignments help students build self-confidence and prepare for lasting wellness when discharged from the program. Relationships formed with caring teachers and parents also provide positive support systems and role models to foster social-emotional growth outside of clinical sessions. Our goal is to keep students progressing in their education and instill a lifelong love of learning.  By pairing academics with art, music, hands-on projects, and other engaging modalities, we strive to make the classroom experience consistently inspiring and rewarding. When students find joy and meaning in their studies, motivation to achieve increases tremendously. This dynamic learning environment has helped many Liahona students who previously struggled in traditional systems rediscover their academic passions and potential.

Building Life Skills through Schoolwork

Families entrusting their sons to our residential therapeutic boarding school can feel confident their educational needs will not be neglected amidst intense clinical recovery work. Our teaching model is designed to cultivate well-being and academic excellence. Students pursuing excellence in the classroom, bolstered by the stability of our therapeutic community, gain invaluable life skills and maintain positive momentum on their journeys back to optimal health.  The strong foundation established at Liahona sets graduates up for ongoing success long after formal treatment ends. For any teenager facing barriers to learning due to emotional or behavioral issues, maintaining academic progress must remain a top priority, along with clinical care. At Liahona Academy, renowned for our dynamic therapeutic boarding school programs, stimulating education is fully integrated as a tool for healing and growth. Through individualized attention, diverse learning opportunities, and seamless collaboration between our teaching and clinical teams, we nurture students holistically to thrive as whole people.  Any families considering residential treatment programs should feel confident entrusting their son's academic future to our compassionate, nourishing educational environment as much as his emotional well-being and development.

Preparing Students for Long-Term Success

At Liahona Academy, renowned for transforming lives through comprehensive therapeutic boarding school programs, nurturing students' academic excellence remains central to our mission.  Families can feel secure knowing their sons will gain far more than caught-up credits during their time with us - they will discover joy in learning, build self-confidence through academic successes, and leave with an educational foundation and vision for their future. For any teenager struggling to stay engaged in school due to emotional barriers, we offer an innovative teaching environment fully integrated with treatment to restore them to overall health, well-being, and continuous achievement.
