You Can Get A High School Diploma at Residential Treatment Programs

Residential treatment programs provide intensive help for youth with extreme mental, emotional and behavioral problems. These facilities offer full time care so that teens can be immersed in a consistent therapeutic environment run by trained and experienced staff. Residential treatment programs are generally for children and teens that have not responded to outpatient options or need more concentrated treatment for emotional or psychiatric needs. If you have decided to send your son to such a program, your first concern is likely about him turning his life around. At the same time, you don’t want his education to fall by the wayside either.

The good news is that many residential treatment facilities offer academic programs in conjunction with their therapeutic agenda. While some simply offer options toward taking the GED, you should consider that there is a great benefit to taking the traditional educational route for an actual diploma. Either way, if you want academics to be an important part of your son’s overall treatment, you should do your research on the facility in question, as not all academic laws and regulations are created equal from state to state.

Some states do not require their educators and tutors to have or maintain any kind of educational licensing in order to teach. As you are researching programs, you should check to see whether or not the teachers are fully licensed and if the academic program is accredited. You should also consider facilities that will help your son work off of existing 504 plans and IEP’s. If a potential program is not willing to be upfront about the credentials of their teachers and tutors, you should consider that a red flag.
