Reasons Teens Lie?
Most teenagers who are compulsive liars often do so to escape punishments and create false images about themselves to people. This act is a ubiquitous and natural process in a teenager's life. During your teenage years, you desire the ability to make your own life choices. There are several other reasons why teenagers lie. Some of these reasons are:- Cover Up: Some teenagers lie to cover up for their friends or siblings to help them out of situations. These teenagers also lie to cover up their emotions because they want to look cool. Although this is normal for many teenagers, it is not moral or ethical.
- Avoiding Conflict: Most teenagers lie to get attention when they feel unwanted. These teenagers also lie to prevent conflict and protect their privacy.
- Deviant Behaviour: Teenagers often lie to cover up their dangerous behaviors and manipulate their parents. An example of this bad behavior teenagers hide is doing drugs.
- School: Some teenagers lie about their schoolwork, who their friends are, and romantic relationships. These teens often lie about their homework because they do not feel like doing it at the moment.
- Expenses: Sometimes, teenagers lie to their parents about what they spend their money on and their activities at parties.
- False Images: Teens often create false perceptions about themselves to people to earn their admiration. They tend to lie to their parents and teachers to make themselves look better when doing this.
Why Do Teens Need to Stop Lying?
Constant lying makes teenagers rely on manipulation to control certain situations. It turns into your defense mechanism, enabling you to hide your feelings. Lying hurts your trust in other people and self-worth. A common health consequence of dishonesty is that it’s mentally exhausting. Lying increases an individual's stress level and impacts the individual’s life in various ways. - Try to identify the reason and what’s pressuring you to lie
- Find a good time to converse with your parents about why you lie
- Occasionally, practice telling your friends the truth
- Admit and own up to it to your parents whenever you lie
- Find ways to reduce your stress levels because lying can be a reaction to feeling overwhelmed
- Keep a journal about your lies to make you more aware of it
