Common FAQs About Boarding Schools For Troubled Teens

The media has been talking a lot lately about therapeutic boarding schools and their place in helping troubled teens with various conditions. You may have been wondering what they are and how they work. Here are some common FAQs about boarding schools for troubled teens.

How Is a Therapeutic Boarding School Different Than Regular Boarding Schools?

These schools focus 50% on academic performance, particularly improving it where a teen has struggled and 50% on therapy and addressing emotional and mental health problems that have held them back. They have trained staff in both regards that are amazingly helpful for integrating both purposes into a single experience.

What Kind of Conditions Do These Programs Address?

Some include:
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Behavioral Disorders such as ODD
  • Eating Disorders
  • Mental Health Concerns
  • Depression
  • Suicidal Ideation
  • Personality Disorders
An official diagnosis is not necessary for admission to a boarding school.

My Child Has Become Violent In The Past, Does He Qualify?

There may be cases where a child who has been either repeatedly or seriously violent may not be able to be admitted into a therapeutic boarding school for the safety of the student, other students, and staff members. However, this can be looked at by administrators on a case by case basis.

Do These Programs Treat Substance Abuse?

There are no actual substance abuse programs available in these programs. However, there is often overlap with other conditions, such as ADD. In that case, we can treat underlying conditions. We do offer separate group therapy for teens who have experienced drug abuse but keep it separate from the other students. This stops the act of “war stories” from being shared.

Does Insurance Cover a Therapeutic Boarding School?

At Liahona Residential Treatment Center, the use of health insurance for treatment varies case by case. Depending on your teens diagnosis and the treatment they receive, insurance is usually able to help cover a portion of the treatment. Working with our staff will help you to get a better understanding of insurance coverage and out-of-pocket expenses.

How Long Is The Stay?

There is no single answer to this question. For some students, they need only a few months of intensive care in order to work through a plan to return to their normal school. Others choose to remain for entire high school careers and do better under the mingled program. Find out more at Liahona Academy.
