Depression in adolescents is a disorder that affects many teenagers. It may be described as a feeling of sadness. Most of us feel this way at one time or another and for short periods of time. But, true depression in teenagers is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness interfere with everyday life. These feelings can lead to loss of self-worth, discouragement and loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed.
Professionals do not know the exact cause for adolescent depression but they believe it may be caused by chemical changes in the brain. Some researchers believe it may be a gene problem or it may be activated by stressful events, such as: the death of a friend or relative, a breakup with a girlfriend or failing grades. It is probably a combination of several issues.
Teenagers can respond to depression in many different ways. One of the most common way is a depressed mood. Sometimes the regular process of maturing and the stresses that come with it often produces feelings of depression. There may also be parental conflict with the new found independence of depressed teens.
Teens who are most likely to become depressed show low self-esteem, emotional issues and are very derogatory of themselves. Also, today’s boys are facing unprecedented stresses from many directions. Because of bullying or harassment at school, child abuse, learning disabilities, stressful life events and clinical disorders, adolescent depression is a real problem. It can change the way teenagers see themselves, and those around them. But perhaps the biggest problem with today’s teenage boys is that they are unable to identify their own feelings and thus unable to communicate about them.
